OUTPUT 11

Practical implementation of PCSI on the selected pedestrian crossings in Poland

The task will be implemented as part of working package 4 (WP4. Teaching materials development related to the Pedestrian crossing safety management).
The task will be to implement the PCSI in practice in Poland at pedestrian crossings without traffic lights in urban areas, using the method developed in Intellectual Output 10. Part of the field tasks will be carried out by a team consisting of partners from Poland and project partners.
The task includes the following:

• Preparatory work related to the selection of pedestrian crossings (crossings roads with 1×2 cross-section without a refuge island, 1×2 cross-section with a refuge island, 2×2 or 1×4 cross-section), collecting data on road traffic and events.
• Field work consisting in performing PCSI in accordance with the prepared methodology under Intellectual Output 10.
• Preparation of the research report.
• Verification of adopted assumptions of the developed methodology.

Planned results of the task:

• Identification and classification of hazards and their sources on the pedestrian crossings without traffic lights in Poland.
• Collecting data for a database in Intellectual Output 3,
• Development of recommendations for verification of the PCSI and PCSR implementation methodology developed within Intellectual Output 10
• Preparing the content-related input for use in teaching materials developed as part of Intellectual Output 13.
• .

Target groups:

1. Research staff (road safety auditors and inspectors) from institutions involved in the project.
2. Specialists working on road safety issues at the regional, national and international levels.

Elements of innovation:

1. Implementation and verification of the new PCSI methodology at crossings without traffic lights.
2. The capacity to apply the new methodology in different countries in terms of user behaviour and legal norms.
3. Implementation of PCSI and PCSR in international teams within project partner countries – exchange of views, knowledge and culture in transport.

Expected impact:

The results of the practical implementation of PCSI procedures in Poland, together with the reports, can be used in future teaching (for students) and training (for staff performing RSI) processes throughout Europe. Materials developed as part of the task will be used in training and course programmes.

Transferability potential:

The results of the practical implementation of PCSI procedures in Poland, together with recommendations for updating the developed methodology, will be available on the Internet platform, which will give access to universities, research centres and road authorities dealing with this issue throughout Europe.

The division of work:

The work will be divided among all consortium participants and will include:
• Preparatory work.
• Field tests.
• Preparation of a report on the conducted PCSI research.
• Development of recommendations for verification of Intellectual Output 10.
• Comparison with the results of work obtained in the Intellectual Output 12.
• Development of assumptions for implementation of Intellectual Output 13.
• Preparation of publications summarising completed work.

The tasks leading to the production of the intellectual output:

The leading institution will be GUT. GUT will be responsible for:
• selection of pedestrian crossings for the research,
• collecting data about pedestrian crossings,
• participation in the implementation of PCSI with other partners,
• merging the PCSI report from all studied pedestrian crossings in Poland.

Applied method:

As part of this task, the method that will be the result of work within Intelectual Output 10 will be used. The method should take into account both similarities and differences between countries.
